From the international bestselling author of THE MASK OF TIME and THE SEVENTH MOON.
It all begins with The Original Sin...
Mercedes Eduard--rich, powerful and still beautiful--lives quietly on her Costa Brava estate, her turbulent past behind her. Until the package from America arrives the graphic photo of her daughter Eden, and the impossible demand for ten million dollars.
This is no ordinary kidnapping. Its roots go back beyond the Spanish Civil War to an original sin which has shadowed three generations and now links its heirs in a twisted chain of revenge.
Will it end in damnation or salvation?
Triumph or tragedy?
The answer lies in a passionate love story, an ancient mystery--and a secret which will change lives forever.

Warning If you're uncomfortable with incest I suggest you stay away from this book!
*Spoilers*
The book isn't so bad, it's quite a good one actually, but I feel the author could have done a lot better. I feel there are some elements of the story which could have been delved into further, while others were given too much detail and importance. Also, I was disappointed that Gerard, the main person/reason why things happened in the story, was left at the end without any sort of punishment against the evils he meted out towards others. Rape is a heinous crime, and whoever commits it shouldn't go unpunished! His actions led to the consequences of what happens to others later in the story. He is the reason why so many people are suffering, and yet I find not one character blaming him or even be angry with him. I hated that Mercedes just accepted the fact that she mated with him, like it is almost normal. She tells Joel about it like she willingly went into this mating process on her own accord and was not forced into it!
Joel and Eden becomes victims of their parents's past actions. I felt so bad for them, especially Joel, who is such a good person at heart. Even after everything he still treats his 'mother' with kindness, not uttering even one word of hatred to her. I do not condone what he did to Eden, but knowing his past I can somehow understand him in a way. And I don't really know how to feel about their reunion again in the end. What kind of relationship will they have? I was a bit bothered by that, because whatever it will be, it can't really be healthy!
All in all, an average book, though disappointing at times, kept me quite interested till the end. Like I said if you're bothered with incest, do not read the book, if not, go for it.
I only wish I read the hard copy version of Original Sin instead of the version. So many mistakes in spelling and sentence structure. Like auto-correct was relied on more than it should have been. It was very distracting. Other than that, I loved the story and the characters. This is the 4th book that I have read by Marius Gabriel, and plan on reading more.
A lovely novel, I could not stop reading, it's tells of the life of Mercedes from being a child and then an adult, the intrigues and mysteries and loves in her life, it's a beautiful story and at times I had tears in my eyes because it was also very sad.
This book was hard to put down. It has everything you could want in a good read. The characters are vividly portrayed - some are larger than life, some you'll love, some you'll hate. An interesting historical background. Flowing seamlessly between Franco's Spain, with all the pathos and drama of that era, and the modern day of affluent America. The storyline is a real mystery thriller and will keep you up into the early hours. Highly recommended.
The writer seems to have an affliction with incest, it's in more then just one of his books, could have done with out it, the book would have been better reading for me.
This author is new to me. I*n the last couple of weeks I have read 3 of his books.
They are all absolutely wonderful. I didn't want to finish them and that is quite rare. His writing is excellent, and lots of suspense. I have downloaded the rest of his books, and can't wait to read them.
This is the fifth book of Marius Gabriel’s I have read... and will not be the last. He writes such strong prose that I find myself going back and reading passages over and over again, savoring their flavors. So far Wars in Spain, Germany, Paris and the world appear as strong central characters in his work, forging new paths, new decisions and not always as expected. He introduces topics not generally discussed in polite society, not to shock, but it does in its honesty.
I highly recommend Mr Gabriel’s work to any passionate reader looking for an unexpected journey of discovery.
I have read many of this author's stories; jeezums, he can tell them ! But this one is rambling with an ending that renders the whole marathon of reading it - for it is VERY long - predictable yet inconclusive. I agree with other reviewers that there are just too many issues in this book, none of which are fully developed. But what really irritated me was the way in which the author stops the story dead in its tracks and we are suddenly spirited away by years to new people and new places. All of a sudden the story jumps (no chapter break just a paragraph) where a girl called, Françoise suddenly appears. In the previous paragraph the reader is in Spain. You kind of stop and think - hang on, have I missed something here, who is Françoise ? The version that I read on my Ipad is RIDDLED with grammatical and spelling mistakes. The author's style is earthy and the use of the "f" word is sprinkled here and there in context but it is as though the censor has replaced the first letter (I know that if I write it my review will not be posted....) with an "L". Luck is not the same, folks ! The book is too slow, weighed down as it is with the introduction of too many distracting side stories and characters that the author seems to feel are all totally dysfunctional.
