I bought this book to see if I could re-connect with the magic I experienced when the story was read to me almost ninety years ago. And I did! I could almost hear my mother's voice as the wonderful characters- the children and their noble dog and Bread, Sugar, Milk, Light and Water emerge from the story.I suggest, however, that only the very young among modern children will discover the same fascination. A four-year old may not find the style of story-telling archaic, but most children reared on Disney movies will. Ah well, childhood magic takes many forms. I loved mine. And I am happy for new enchantment for children however it exists!

This is only a printed version possibly of the play. No illustrations, maybe a teacher's or directors edition? I returned it.
I read this book before, and I like the personalization of ordinary household items, like bread, sugar, and water. The children deny suffering associated with poverty. Clearly designed as a fantasy, and the characters are rather cliched and/or archetypal. The message -- There's no place like home -- is more satisfying in The Wizard of Oz
This is a good book for reflection and contemplation. I even took notes and taped them to the wall. In a world of so much human-created misery, it's nice to be able to find some wisdom in a book from which one can take notes and tape to the wall. Thanks Maurice.
This is one of my all time favorite children's book. The search for the bluebird of happiness is something that rings true in all of our lives even as adults. The metaphorical journey Tytyl and Mytyl take through the different lands and the challenges they face all teach important lesson of s. Of course the most important one of all is that sometimes we don't recognize happiness when we have it in our hands. I love that these children are motivated to take this journey to help someone else. There are so many important messages in this story that I could almost write a book about it. It has a timeless quality.
