Screwing The System is a very British, mostly feel good, mostly fluffy MM romance with an age difference (16 years) and some light BDSM/DD. 24 year old Cosmo Rawlins meets just turned 40 Alasdair Grant when he interviews for his cleaning company. Or rather when he attempts to throw an interview for his cleaning company as Cosmo has no desire to be hired. He just has to interview to satisfy Jobseeker services which has something to do with being on the dole. Cosmo is a musician, so he wants his time free to practice with his band and to concentrate on his music.Alasdair can see right off the bat that Cosmo needs some structure, routine and discipline. In Cosmo’s defense – it isn’t necessarily easy to develop these traits when you have never been taught them or even taught to understand their inherent value and ultimate benefit. The bossy top in Alasdair is immediately intrigued and Cosmo certainly ups the ante with his flirting…"Let’s just say I have a few extracurricular activities that might interfere with my ability to sit down and drive each day.” – said no one on a job interview ever – except for Cosmo. So understandably it naturally flows that the next thing you know Alasdair is talking about tops and subs and Cosmo is one step away from rooting around Alasdair’s crotch like a pig looking for truffles - during the interview.
And so begins their affair. Alasdair is a bit of a control freak with a tragic past and Cosmo is a bit of a brat with a rebellious streak and his own tragic past. They're both likable, they’re sweet together and they really do perfectly compliment each other. The BDSM/DD angle really isn’t my thing but it wasn’t overdone. It didn’t entirely permeate all areas of their lives and was to a large extent confined (more or less) to the bedroom – which made is easier for me to connect with the characters. I just don’t get the whole wanting to tell someone else what to do or wanting to be told what to do – but hey; different strokes. It was still fun and sometimes even a little hot despite that it wasn't my cuppa.

Cosmo Rawlins had a plan. He’d do just enough to be able to collect unemployment benefits while still being able to avoid work and concentrate on his music. What he really didn’t expect was being called out by an incredibly sexy prospective employer. Alasdair Grant has no plans beyond a good time when he asks Cosmo out on a date. There are no plans because he’s not going to get into a relationship again because he’s not over the last one, thank you very much. Well, things change. It doesn’t take long for both guys to realize they like everything the other has to offer. However, life doesn’t happen in a vacuum. Alasdair has to come to grips with the fact he’s functionally created a closet door for himself in an attempt to get business contracts, and Cosmo has to accept there are people who have walked his particular path in life and maybe accepting advice and instruction is okay. Then, an unexpected wrinkle in a business deal of Alasdair’s has the potential to derail everything he and Cosmo have worked for.
This story checks a lot of boxes. It’s sweet but not overly sweet. It’s angsty but not overly angsty. It’s sexy but not overly sexy. It’s also really enjoyable and easy to read. There is complexity, but it’s handled in such a way that is less in your face than it could be. The age difference between Cosmo and Alasdair is there, but there isn’t an undue amount of drama about it. For the most part I like that the book doesn’t have an undue amount of drama, but I would have liked to see one aspect of the story explored in more depth. Cosmo becomes Alasdair’s kept man. I suspect had I read a similar living situation in a het book I’d have yelled at the characters to not do it. Cosmo didn’t want to jump into the relationship for fear of losing autonomy, but he did it. The complex situation was there but largely under-explored. Interestingly, when I read and reviewed this book years ago I didn’t comment on it at all.
A lot of this story is about Cosmo’s coming of age. In so many ways he’s older than he should be. He’s already had the negative experiences that tend to make us jaded and cynical as we age. He’s got strong self defense mechanisms, but he’s still naive enough to not notice who is in love with him. Cosmo is also still learning the difference between dreams that are nothing but dreams and dreams that have a potential to become reality.
All in all this is a sweet story about two guys who are inherently nice but are terrified of being hurt again. The complexity is there even if it’s unexplored in some instances, but more than anything this is a great story about two guys falling in love and all the things that come up as they allow that to happen.
This one was the surprise of the year for me. I thought the kitschy name and the way these two started out was a little gimmicky - but OMG - this one really went all the way. It had my attention with the smart and quirky writing style and the characters were fascinating. The way these two opposites collided and really made a great story. This turned out really to be one of the best stories I've read in long time. Well done. I'll be looking to read more titles by this author.
I've been reading a lot of m/m books lately that just don't stick the dismount (and doesn't that sound dirty in this context). The first quarter of this book is great, with the interview scene and then the first sex scene. Things were hot and interesting. But they went sideways from there. It was like the author knew that there had to be a certain amount of words and just made the plot fit that criteria. It just kept getting more and more rushed and by the end we were on a runaway train.
If this book had taken place over six months rather than 4 weeks, if it hadn't ended so abruptly and oddly, then it would have worked more for me. As it is, this is the third Myles book I've read and each time there was something that didn't work for me.
